Capt. David Kang - 419th CSSB - Camp Taji, Iraq

From Southern California to Northern Iraq

For most of us the Fourth of July holiday typically means picnics or barbeques with family and friends and of course, fireworks. But for thousands, this holiday will find them half a world away from those familiar traditions. I speak of course of the men and women serving in our military.

One such soldier is one of our own – franchisee David Kang, owner of Kang’s Natural Products in Los Angeles, California. David is a captain in the 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) and is currently deployed in Iraq and serving at Camp Taji. Camp Taji, formerly named Camp Cooke, is located approximately twenty miles north of Baghdad. (The camp was renamed in 2004 as part of an Army-wide effort to give facilities in the area a friendlier connotation for the locals.)

The 419th CSSB is a National Guard Logistics Unit from Irvine, California and David is the accountable officer for the water, fuel, and rations like MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) for those soldiers that “go outside the wire” on missions that take them outside the relative safety of the camp walls. His unit supports the approximately 20,000 soldiers, foreign nationals, and military contractors currently residing at Camp Taji.

The camp does have a surprising number of amenities including the largest PX in Iraq. They may not have a Fruitfull® freezer handy, but they do have access to American standards such as Subway, Burger King, and Pizza Hut. (David mentioned that Iraq would be a great place for Fruitfull® since it rarely gets cold there. He may have an ulterior motive though. Our resident marketing expert Tabitha had the pleasure of training David when he first became a franchisee back in 2006 and according to her, she has yet to meet another franchisee who enjoyed his own products so much!) Still as the photo below shows, the surroundings there are a far cry lush and sunny southern California.

Camp Taji, Iraq

But the folks serving at Camp Taji do keep a little reminder of home flying on the base...

California flag flying on base

David typically arrives in his office at 0730 and as you can see, he has a nice view of the sandbags outside his window.

David at the office

In his spare time, David spends time at the camp’s gym or reading a good book. (He says that he has read more books since beginning his tour current tour of duty back in December than he’s read in his entire life.) David and his unit are scheduled for a ten month deployment and hope to be back in familiar surrounding sometime in September. In the meantime, his parents have been keeping an eye on the business for him. When asked if he would like to say anything to the folks back home, he asked that we pass along this: “I just ask you all to keep supporting the men and women in uniform.”

As far as his time in Iraq goes, he just wants “to make the best out of it.”

Well, David…that is the least we can do.

So if you’re reading this, please keep David and his fellow soldiers in your thoughts and prayers -- especially this weekend as we celebrate Independence Day with our loved ones.

KickStarts

Carolina Belles

A Happy & Healthy Triple 'Treat': Tabitha, Denise, Lindsey

North Carolina and Virginia LOVE Fruitfull®

It's hard to follow Denise's letter regarding our KickStart, but I'll try to give you a different side of our week together.

Denise is one of the easiest franchisees to work with. She has always impressed me with her organization skills and ability to remember detail when needed. From the time she sent me her actively pursuing list a few weeks before our arrival, I could tell we would be successful.

Sunday when Lindsey and I checked into our hotel I immediately noticed the small market next to the front desk. (Yes, I am always hunting for new accounts.) They sell chips, candy bars, crackers, bottled water, soda’s and in their small freezer unit they had burritos, lean cuisines and ice cream sandwiches. It was very sad looking so in true Tabitha fashion; I added it to our list of potential customers.

Monday's weather turned out to be a monsoon but we certainly didn't let it set the tone for the week. We trucked along to visit with DECA, Defense Commissary Agency. Although we didn't sign them, we do have the potential to sign them as a National Account as long as we follow their instructions and improve on their suggestions. Lindsey and I will keep everyone posted this year.

Through the week we managed to sign a number of locations including a hospital that is Sodexo. We even delivered their freezer and held a sampling for them. Lindsey and I ventured out to the hotel next to ours one night and I showed her how easy it is to ask for the manager and sell our products after hours. The manager was very excited and couldn't wait for us to bring samples back and introduce Denise. So two days later we went back and learned of two more locations they owned. Hotels are great locations because the clientele is always changing. As a traveler, I can honestly tell you I appreciate when a hotel offers great, healthy grab and go snacks I can take to my room. (Yes, we also ended up signing the hotel we stayed in)

Denise has a lot of follow up to do and I can't wait to see the results in her sales. Good luck Denise and I know you’ll have a great year!!

Tabitha Locke

Denise Huffstickler's letter about her KickStart week:

Dear Linda,

You were right again (doesn't everyone love hearing that)! Even though I had to take money out of my personal account to finance my Kickstart, I've made half of that back by mid-week and the rest will come with setups next week! What a growth spurt for my little business!

We started out Monday headed up to Fort Lee, VA, to meet with the Defense Commissary Agency. Since I live in a military mecca, I was excited upon starting my franchise at the possibility of being in all the commissaries and exchanges. We got a lot of valuable information from the DECA representative and if we can get our "Nielson" ratings squared away, I think we have a shot at getting them! We had time to run down to my house so Tabitha could say Hi to Louie and she and Lindsey met our newer addition, Sadie. There were doggie kisses all over the place!

On Tuesday we followed up on 2 of the Follett locations at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Their rep seemed eager to bring us in, he just had to get final approval from the boss, which we got the next day. We also stopped by a few of the Morrison hospitals in Virginia Beach, VA. When we returned to the hotel that Tabitha and Lindsey were staying, we presented there as well. Signed! I delivered snacks that Friday and will setup frozen this coming Friday. There are also a number of other Marriott hotels that I will be checking out in the next few weeks. Then we went next door to the A Loft and then to the Springhill Suites. Both very interested -- follow-ups to come.

On Wednesday, we visited Sentara-Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA. They signed up right there and we arranged a sampling on Friday morning. We then went off to our appointment with Norfolk State University. While they were sampling the fruit bars, Tabitha worked her magic! They want to wait until the end of July/first of August to set up for the next semester -- but they're taking 4 freezers! We were high-fiving on that one!

On Thursday we were all over the map. We signed the Fort Story Mini-Mart (AAFES) in Virginia Beach, VA. I had gotten a verbal OK from the previous manager last year, but then she changed her mind. The current manager couldn't wait to get set up. I go back there on the 16th! Then our schedule got flipped around a bit, but we visited Fort Eustis and the Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, VA, both requesting follow-ups in the next 2 weeks.. By the time we were finished there, we started to head back to Langley Air Force Base, but the contact still wasn't there, so I'll follow up on them next week.

Friday -- I picked up the girls and their luggage in my "short bus". We headed out to set up the freezer and snack rack at Sentara Obici Hospital and do a sampling. Lindsey got experience with samplings, and we all had to giggle at many of the employees' reaction to her question "Would you like to try a sample...?" Some scurried by, trying their best to avert us, while others asked if they had to fill out a survey. Apparently there had been a number of vendors selling products in the common area and these folks were sort of shell-shocked. But we got the expected results once people tried the products. The manager had to leave before we finished, but said he had gotten a number of positive comments. I also had a chat with the dietician regarding patient tray possibility! We headed back to my house to switch vehicles and let Louie and Sadie say goodbye to the girls. Then off to the airport! What a week!

Final Tally: 10 New Accounts, 13 to follow-up in next 2 weeks! Plus I now have the momentum to continue making these calls on the rest of my mile-long list!

Gotta Grow!

Denise

Fruitfull® in the City of Angels

Dyan at the Mariners Church Cafe

Lindsey Leaves the Nest
-- and Soars in Southern California!

I am on cloud 9 as I am returning from Dyan's California KickStart, and it has nothing to do with me sitting in an airplane that is flying through the clouds.☺ Dyan and I had an amazing week that left me looking forward to more challenges and left Dyan excitedly planning how she would handle all of the new business we discovered.

Dyan's focus this past week was to obtain larger accounts, so bright and early on Monday morning we began to tackle her wish list of hospitals and colleges. Luckily we focused on the hospitals in the beginning of the week, otherwise we would've missed out on the face-to-face time we had with some major decision-makers. Apparently there was a big convention at the end of the week in Vegas...hard to compete with that! I am confident that the follow-up Dyan will be doing with the hospitals this week will land her several great accounts!

By the time Wednesday rolled around, we had laid a lot of ground work and covered a lot of ground. Our first appointment at Capitol Group started the day right with a very positive response AND a referral to another Compass account at a very beautiful and affluent university in the nearby vicinity. On our way to the next stop we stumbled upon a massive complex which turned out to be The Chet Holifield Federal Building. Curiosity may not have been a good thing for the cat, but for us it meant our first definite account of the week! Additionally, the cafeteria was run by a franchise that is local to California and is found in many corporate cafeterias throughout the state. The manager offered to pass on our information to his company, so that we might have opportunity in their other locations (yay!).

Thursday it seemed that everyone we approached had been waiting for us to ask, so that they could say "yes!" My personal favorite "yes" was from Mariners Church. This account required many unreturned phone calls, two stop ins, and two more phone calls before they finally called us requesting a delivery on Friday...they just couldn't wait another day.☺ Talk about a payoff for persistence!!

We finished up our week of hard yet rewarding work by visiting a handful of Cal State campuses, and let me tell you, they are HUGE! I am looking forward to hearing how many locations they decide to place us in; the possibilities are endless.

I am so grateful to Dyan for such a wonderful first time experience in California and to my family at H&H for making it possible!

Cheers!

Lindsey

Dyan Robles' letter about his KickStart week:

Dear Linda,

What a truly great week I had last week with Lindsey. For her first time out on her own, I was greatly impressed with how she handled every potential account -- Tabitha did a great job training her -- so much so I called her Tabitha at a sales call! (Oops, I was a little embarrassed, but Lindsey took it as a complement).

We kept very busy this week hitting up about 8 potential accounts a day, primarily colleges and hospitals. We started our 1st appointment Monday at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, and ended the day in the South Orange County area, in very affluent neighborhoods. It was a gorgeous day and lunch time landed us in Laguna Beach at a café overlooking the beach. (I felt guilty because I never took Tabitha to such a scenic place for lunch when she was here - sorry Tabitha!) Our hard work paid off in Laguna though with a new account - Whole Foods!

When all was said and done by Friday we had 6 definite accounts; Saddleback College & Long Beach City College, Mariners Church Café, Whole Foods Market, Chet Holifield Federal Building, which holds the national archives and many almost a done deal accounts. This week will be a lot of follow-up, several freezer deliveries and all my catch up deliveries. We were fortunate to hit most of the hospital accounts early in the week before everyone headed to Vegas to a health convention and I can't wait to add a couple of hospitals on my delivery schedule. The biggest account which I should get a definite on Monday is a Compass account at Capitol Group's huge corporate complex. Fruifull® and HIDD would be the only ice-cream, and in August they give out the ice-cream on employee appreciation day for 2500 employees! SWEET!

I am very excited at the success of this week and am extremely grateful to Lindsey and H&H for this Kickstart. It is just the jump I need for a very successful summer and couldn't have come at a better time, warm weather! The great thing about Kickstarts, is you devote the entire week to marketing and nothing else (hard to do on my own). The opportunities that have opened up this past week are great and only happened because of the Kickstart and the hard work Lindsey put into it.

This week also opened up an opportunity to be a vendor at the nation's largest Donate Life Run/Walk & Health Fair at Cal State Fullerton on 4/25. I was bummed when I was told they were booked for vendors, but they had a cancellation and were able to squeeze me in! Last year they had 6000 participants -- I'm excited!

Lindsey and I ended the week in Hollywood Friday night (after a 3 hour drive in traffic) before her late flight out, where she got to experience the wild and crazy side of California. I'm sure she was just as exhausted as I when I dropped her off at the airport at 9:30 p.m., but it was a good exhaustion of a hard worked week!

Sincerely,

Dyan Robles

On a Roll in Vegas

Jason and his fiancée, Michelle

A Winner In Vegas!
By Susan Scotts

A Cool Breeze swept through Las Vegas last week -- and I don't mean the temperatures which were in the low 40's! Jason Lauw's company, Cool Breeze, swept through Las Vegas and left a trail of cool treats - and new accounts - all throughout the city. We were on a ROLL!

Both Dick Dyer and Fred Steyer told Jason about getting hospital and university locations. With Jason's unique city, on our last two week kick start we had targeted, and gotten, almost all of the casinos on the Vegas Strip, as well as many Hispanic markets. This left very little time to call on great locations like hospitals and universities, so Jason took advantage of the generous $1,000 Kick Start and he is so glad he did! Talk about a GOOD HAND!

By the way, we NEVER got a NO! We signed NUMEROUS, huge locations, such as UNLV (who took 3 freezers alone), Spring Valley Hospital (where Jason will soon be having his new baby son!), Desert Springs Hospital, Mountain View Hospital, and three Follett bookstores at major universities!

Many of the hospital locations were Sodexo. In almost all instances, they asked us where we had been! It was like they were just waiting for a healthy, no trans fat, gluten free, DELICIOUS treat! So here we came, and as LUCK would have it, one of the first accounts we signed happened to be not only married to another Sodexo manager, but a former food broker. She knew everyone and gave us referral after referral. And, the next morning when we were meeting with her husband, I got no further than hello when he said, "My wife told me all about it last night; bring it in!" One of the easiest sales ever!

We also had to 'resell' the MGM casinos, which we sold in our last KickStart, housing 6 different casinos that Jason delivers to. It went so well he added additional casinos for Jason to deliver to! Jason's favorite locations were two retail/convenience stores on the Strip. One of them Jason feels will be absolutely the best account, it is right on the Strip, tens of thousands of people walk by it every single day. All in all, a WINNER of a week!

Thanks to Jason, actually Jason's parents, for all the 'comped' buffets and drinks -- it pays to GAMBLE with Cool Breeze!

Jason Lauw's letter about his KickStart week:

Dear Linda,

Looks like Siegfried and Roy have finally been replaced. The "Susan Scotts' Experience", has taken over the Las Vegas Strip. After this week I might just change my company name from Cool Breeze to SMOOTH BREEZE!!!!

The best part about Susan is, she pretty much had our sales schedule set about 3 weeks prior to her arrival. I gave her the names and numbers of various food directors and she made all the appointments in advance. I have approached hospitals in the past with minimal success. But she has the "smooth talk" and a crazy way of relating to each person we presented to.

After signing up two freezers for Mountain View Hospital, Susan saw a picture of this lady's dog sitting on her desk. So she made dog talk! Who knew that 3 minutes of conversation and compliments about this buyer's dog would help us so much. This lady was on the phone with other hospital Sodexo buyers letting them know that Fruitfull® was in town!

We then signed up three freezers at UNLV - University of Nevada. This is a great place for Fruitfull® to be. Not only because of the volume of sales that I think it will do, but also for the expose that the freezers will get so people will know the product to buy around town.

We then headed to Spring Valley Hospital. Susan said that this buyer was going to be a tough one cause she sounded like she was having a bad day on the phone. But when we met her, Susan injected her with some "SMOOTH." This lady kicked out a competitor's five basket ice cream freezer for our three basket Fruitfull® freezer. I was lucky that we had an appointment with this buyer early in the week because it ended up that she used to be a broker and she gave us all the contact names for Sodexo, Aramark and HMS all over town. To top it off, her husband was the food director at another hospital that Susan made an appointment with the next day. Needless to say we signed that hospital up in less than 10 seconds of meeting him:☺

There were many more places that we signed up through out the week. I had such a fun time with Susan this week. I have a renewed confidence in sales once again. We did so well that I am able hire a delivery person who starts training tomorrow. Linda, There is no doubt that you'll see my sales grow at least 25% just from this KickStart.

Sincerely,
Jason Lauw
Cool Breeze Distributing
Las Vegas

Ps. To all the other franchises out there. If you don't take advantage of the KickStart program this year, you are crazy. I had Susan out for 3 weeks of KickStarts in the past 6 years, and she has sold so many high volume and corporate accounts that I would have not been able to approach by myself. Susan is such a professional and her experience shows. I would recommend her to anyone who plans on having a KickStart. Reserve her quick cause there's a limited number of tickets sold at "THE SUSAN SCOTTS' EXPERIENCE!!!"

Breezing Through Chicago

Tabitha and Henry take a walk on the wild side

A Job Well Done

My first time working with Henry Cua in and around Wilmette, IL was fabulous. We started Monday off with some frigid weather (37 degrees to be exact!) But that didn't stop us though from hitting the roads. We started later in the morning Monday because Henry had to make a delivery. Current customers definitely come first! We still managed to secure a beautiful gourmet market called Antons Fruit Basket and we went ahead and delivered his freezer on Wednesday because the owner was so excited. Good thing we did because the weather made a turn for the better and it was 80 degrees by the end of the week.

We also secured three high schools which are run by Sodexo. Yeah Sodexo! The first lady we spoke to at Deerfield High School is also in charge of two elementary and one junior high. We presented Fruit Goodness® to her for the elementary schools and Fruitfull® of course for the junior high school. She will soon be having a managers' meeting with those three schools and will let Henry know when he can add them to his route.

Next we hit the Lincoln Park Zoo which is run by Levy, a Compass Group account. Coco is thrilled and wants a freezer in their new Natural Café and wants to place Fruitfull® in the vendor push carts that wheel through the zoo everyday. This Zoo is actually free to get into. You only have to pay for parking. I figure it leaves more spending money for snacks, like Fruitfull®!

We ended the week presenting to hospitals were we secured Lutheran General and Henry has already delivered. We will also find out on four more hospitals next week but heard that the managers of all four facilities LOVED the samples.

Ending on a very positive note, Henry called me after I left and reminded me of the big Asian Mall-Market we went to. We sort-of presented to a guy who obviously was not in charge but was willing to take the samples and information and give it to the right person. It totally panned out! The main person called Henry and asked if he could deliver a freezer that day. Outstanding!!!

Thank you Henry for being so kind and taking such good care of me. (He kept me fed.) haha. I can't wait to do it again next year!

Tabitha

Henry Cua's letter about his KickStart week:

Hi Linda,

I thought it would be a challenge for Tabitha to focus on National Accounts when she came to town. With her charms and knowledge of the products everything went very well. We signed-up 7 new accounts and delivered one freezer on Wednesday from the one account that we signed Monday, this customer just can't wait till next week. Aside from filling them up with 16 cases of Fruitfull® bars in the freezer, this customer also ordered 3 cases of Happy Indulgence® to put in his freezer.

I was interrupted every day with a call or two from my existing customer. We have to take a few side trips to deliver the product in between sales call. We also have several accounts to follow up next week.

The big one is the corporate account that we visited in Indiana named: Strack & Van Til Super Market.  They also own Ultra foods which has 30 stores in the Midwest similar to Whole Foods. They sell mostly organic or natural product with 17 stores in Indiana and 13 stores in Illinois. According to Bob Wasiuta's (Vice President) assistant, he was very impressed with our products. Thanks to Tabitha for helping me drive to Indiana Friday morning to drop off samples and talk to his assistant. I don't want to count the chicken before it's hatched but it looks very promising. I can say how amazing Tabitha was, but she really did a superb job. I have been in this business for more than 12 years; her performance this week did goes beyond my expectation. To show her my gratitude, I treat her to 2-½ hours of heavenly massage with facial treatment and a manicure.

The outcome of this KickStart will reflect on my total sales at the end of the year.

If any franchisee want to join the full trucker club, do a KickStart this year - it is not too late. We need help to H&H to get up to 50 trucks load so that we all can celebrate on a 10 days Cruise.

Thank you again Tabitha,

Respectfully Yours,

Henry Cua

Leaving No Stone Unturned

Tabitha and Baheir pause just long enough to drop off a freezer

On the Road Again...Literally

Baheir Sultan, Fruits of the Caribbean, was one of the lucky winners of a KickStart. Many of you may not be familiar with him because he unfortunately doesn't have time to come to H&H's conventions. He not only runs his Fruitfull® business full time but he also works at Wal-Mart in the automotive department full time. Wow! He is hopeful that with the business we secured him over the week that he may be able to cut back to part time at Wally World and join us at next years symposium. That would be awesome!

We definitely put some miles on the van this week. (Around 800) We started the week off right by signing the first stop we made. It is an International Market that has specialty foods from every country I could think of. We also signed Truman Medical center and visited the University of Missouri which will let Baheir know their decision at the end of July. They used to carry Fruitfull® many years ago and are thrilled that we're back in the area. They actually just need to make sure the maintenance man re-wires the wall so they don't blow a fuse.

The day we were in Sedalia we actually not only signed three Mexican markets but we delivered on the spot because they all had their own freezers. I was very excited to see the reactions of the Hispanic Markets when we had them sample the Horchata bar. Bueno, Bueno they kept saying. It was so cool.

We ended the week signing another World International Market and we delivered to them too. I was impressed that Baheir could speak to them in Turkish but jealous I couldn't understand. ☺

We had long travels but great success. I'm glad that Baheir won a KickStart and hope to see his business thrive this year.

Tabitha Locke

Baheir Sultan's letter about his KickStart week:

Dear Linda,

Tabitha spent a KickStart week with me and did a good job. She is an effective sales person. She is knowledgeable about potentially hot accounts and was able to seize these.

I want to thank her for being patient and traveling far distances with me.

Sincerely,

Hitting a Home Run in the Big Apple

Dilleana, Divinea, Brittany and Tabitha

Let's Play Ball...with Fruitfull®

Sing along to the tune of "Take Me out to the Ball Game"

Divinea and Dilleana loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names,
Took Tabitha there to present one day,
They said yes, shout "Hurray!"
The director man by the name of Joe,
Tasted the coconut and yelled "Bravo!"
Then we all started to smile and say,
Pick your flavors and we'll deliver next day,

Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out to the crowd,
Buy me some "Got Nuts" and Fruitfull® bars,
Yes, we replaced the snacks they used to sell in jars.
Let us root, root, root for our products,
The Mets fans will thank us with sales,
For its one, two, three strikes you're out,
Heavenly Snacks and Tabby prevailed!

As you can probably tell we landed Citi Field where the NY Mets play. This is an Aramark account and I highly suggest looking into your local stadiums and fields since this is the second Baseball Stadium signed this year. We had a fantastic week! We also secured two Sodexo hospitals - Mount Sinai Manhattan and Lenox Hill. We also visited Penn Station and signed a grab and go café called Munchy's Gourmet with snacks. This is a great location because everyone is on the run to catch the train.

We can't forget to mention NYU. They too are Aramark and they want a freezer on June 8th for their summer season and then they want to add six more freezers when the fall semester starts. Then we had an appointment and signed the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have 2000 employees alone and they only carry Dip-n-Dots. Needless to say he is very excited about Fruitfull®.

I am glad I got the chance to work with Divinea and Dilleana. Thank you for being so gracious and I look forward to next year.

Tabitha

Dilleana & Divinea Almoradie
's
letter about their KickStart week:

Linda,

I really don't know what happened last week... It was all a blur...!!! LOL!

All I know is that this week, I'm swamped with all these follow-ups and orders and deliveries and samplings to old customers as well as new ones!

How did this happen???

Seriously, I cannot tell you how grateful Dilleana and I are that we decided to do this kick start with Tabitha. She is one amazing woman!

It all started Sunday, May 10. Dilleana and I along with Yasmin, our shih tzu, picked Tabitha and her sister Britney up at La Guardia airport. After dropping them off at their hotel, we all went off to Central Park and had lunch at the Boathouse inside the park. Then off to a tour of the city with stops at Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral and Chinatown for shopping!

Monday, we start our official kick start! We visited a number of places and immediately signed a store at the Port Authority Bus Terminal for snacks and 2 Manhattan Hospitals run by Sodexo - Lenox Hill and Mt. Sinai Medical Center. We also got a very good response from Circle Line and I am following up with them this week.

Tuesday, we had an appointment with the Brand New Citi field where the NY Mets play - an Aramark location... WOW! They loved our products and the best part is... they gave us free tickets to the game that night! - Field level seats behind first base! LET'S GO METS!!! We had a BLAST!!!

I told Tabitha this was a very very good omen! :D (And indeed it was!!! I just got an order from them this afternoon!!!)

Then it was off to the Bronx where we visited the VA Medical center, Fordham University and Montefiore Medical Center - More follow-ups for me with these locations.

Wednesday, it was off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art...very very interested and will probably put our freezer beside their Dippin' Dips up in the public cafeteria! Tabitha suggested that I also do a sampling in their staff cafeteria - hopefully they will DEMAND a Fruitfull® freezer there too!

We then drove around and stopped at Beth Israel Medical Center...Ultra Kosher - they will definitely put us in as soon as they can get a PO for us... This is an in-house deli/cafe sort of location.

Then off to a Big Asian Markets distributor...keeping our fingers crossed on this one!

Thursday and Friday...

We visited Delmonico Gourmet Foods - a huge deli/cafe outside Grand Central Terminal. Tabitha and Britney had dropped in on this location earlier in the week and asked for the name of the owner... they were told that his name was Bull. So when we got there, we went to this guy who looked like he was in charge and asked for 'Bull'. He responded... 'Bull???!!!!???' Tabitha told him she was told to look for Bull... He said his name was Bill and his co-owner was Paul, but there was no 'Bull' there... hahaha...
It was embarrassing, but he was really nice and we quickly introduced our products to him and he agreed to take a look at them... I will follow up with him this week...

New York University - they definitely want our freezer and will try it at their main cafeteria, then probably in 6 other locations...they are also Aramark.

We also had an appointment with the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital - again, an Aramark location - the manager loved our coconut bar and I will follow up this week.

Whew! I'm sure I missed a number of locations that we visited...I know I have a lot of following up to do...

Again, Thank You! Thank You! Thank You... Tabitha!!!

We will definitely do this again!!!

Fruitfull®'s Not-So-Secret Agents

A lesson in taste: Lindsey, Howie and Davie at Broward College

The Name's Bond, Dave Bond...

Okay, so it's actually funnyman franchisee Dave Weiss; but from the sound of his account of his recent KickStart (complete with stunt driving and Tiki bars), it was something of a sales adventure. And now we hear from the leading lady in this tale - Lindsey:

Well, I have to say I was definitely nervous about my week with Dave Weiss. After all, I'm the newbie and he was the former franchisee of the year!!! It didn't take me long to warm up to Dave, though, as you all probably know he seems to always find a way to make you laugh. I think we ended up with a good balance, he taught me what he has learned throughout his years in business and I helped him keep a positive attitude when approaching places that had given a negative response in the past.

We did experience a slight case of the Mondays, but by Tuesday it was smooth sailing (sometimes straight through signs that warned otherwise). We weren't going to let anything stop us!

One of my favorite success stories is that of Howie at Broward College (this was an account that Dave said he really wanted to land). We presented our Happy & Healthy products to Howie, and he seemed interested (which was exciting in itself). The next morning, however, was when the really good news hit. Howie called to say he had already put the UPCs in the system and that he had called the managers at their 5 locations to tell them about the new products they would be bringing in! The campuses are located in 5 different cities. We were so excited, and I can almost hear the rave reviews from the students (whoop whoop)!

The rest of our week was highly successful as we hobnobbed with country clubbers, answered prayers of all fruit lovers, and provided a delicious kosher treat that can even be eaten right after meat...and then came Friday. Dave and I were flying so high after such a positive week that we didn't see a storm brewing. Now this was no hurricane, but it did threaten to take the wind from our sails.

On Friday morning we went to show a freezer to an account we thought was a definite "go" and without a rhyme or reason they said "no". I couldn't let the week end with salty tears in our margaritas, so I convinced Dave to make a couple more stops. And low and behold on the horizon appeared a Cleveland Clinic, so off the exit we veered. We signed them up straight away, what a perfect way to end our final KickStart day!

It was an absolute honor to work with Dave, and to locate our products in Happy & Healthy's backyard.

Thank you!

Lindsey

Dave Weiss' letter about his KickStart week:

Dear Linda,

Not red lights nor Stop signs could stop Lindsey on her mission to take over South Florida. On the first day of hurricane season Lindsey swooped out of her condo, drove up the road to meet me, and ran into a wall of indifference. Now remember in South Florida, traffic devices are taken at an advisory level. We swooped into a mega-church, tennis courts, country clubs, and other types of public places, and we were escorted out by security personnel. Who would've thought that church folk would have security, but they did!

I was ready to hit the Tiki bar and admit defeat, but not Lindsey, she buckled down and armed herself with bail money and continued on. She was relentless the rest of the week and signed 5 universities, 3 hospitals and several specialty markets, (where she didn't know kosher protocol) and generally just tired me out.

But it was on Friday that she showed her true spirit. After being turned down on a call back that asked us to bring a freezer, I was headed for the Tiki bar again -- but NO, Lindsey said let's finish up this list. I said screw that and even though I was driving she somehow got us into to two more hospitals.

Don't let the size of this little gal fool you. She is a GIANT in my opinion and I see great things in her future.

P.S. By the time we got to the Tiki bar it was past happy hour.

Thanks,

David E. Weiss

Convention 2009

Lucky in Las Vegas!

Convention 2009 began not so bright but very early for those of us in the home office. The trip to the airport began before sunrise for most and it was an unusually quiet crowd (for us!) that gathered at the terminal where we soon joined by Dave and Bonnie Weiss who happened to be sharing the flight. We watched the sunrise as we waited to broad and – after a few cups of coffee – it began to sink in. We’re on our way to VEGAS!

Our flight crew was great and cracked more than a few jokes to break of the monotony of the long flight. Shortly before our arrival in Las Vegas, one attendant gave everyone the opportunity to start their Vegas adventure off right – with a ‘trash bag lottery’. Willing participants were asked to write their seat number on a one dollar bill. The attendant came around with a small trash bag to collect the ‘tickets’ and had one of the passengers – an adorable little four-year-old girl – draw the winning buck. And who should be the lucky winner? Why none other than our very own VP of Operations, Len Murray! (He generously presented the little girl with a portion of the winnings.) Talk about starting the trip off right!

Our flight actually arrived a bit ahead of schedule and we made our way to baggage claim to gather our belongings and meet with the rest of the gang. The wait was surprisingly short and before we knew it we were joined by Romy and Lindsey and on our way to the Alexis Resort where we settled in for the evening.

Sunday morning found everyone bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (after all, our internal clocks were still on Eastern Time.) Despite a few minor setbacks (like the transportation service missing two of our prop cases at the shipping point), we managed to put together a set that didn't look at all improvised. Joni and Lindsey fit right in and before we knew it, the morning had flown by.

Now we were ready for the real fun -- meeting the franchisees! The Welcome Reception kicked off around 5 PM and Joni and I manned the Welcome tables, passing out name badges and goody bags, some with additional surprises inside. And speaking of surprises, Daniel Kriegh brought his own surprise to the party -- a sugar glider that he had tucked into a pocket of his cargo pants! Polly (named after Polly Pockets, of course) was adorable and didn't seem to mind being the center of attention.

After renewing some old acquaintances and making a few new ones, everyone settled down to enjoy a few drinks, snack on some good food, and officially kick off Convention 2009!
