Terry McElhaney’s Frozen Assets

No one would think that eating lunch in the workplace cafeteria could lead to a home business opportunity. But that’s exactly what happened to Terry McElhaney, who now enjoys his own profitable home-based business selling Fruitfull® Happy & Healthy Frozen Fruit Bars.

"They sold the frozen fruit bars where I worked," reveals Terry. "And I really liked them." Soon after his first taste, Terry attended an entrepreneur expo where he stumbled across a Happy & Healthy exhibit. Recognizing the frozen fruit bars as the ones he ate at work every day, Terry was anxious to learn more. "I had always wanted a little cart for selling things at fairs and parks," says Terry. "And a cart is part of the franchise. That’s what got me interested."

Additionally, Terry had grown tired of his 9-5 job. As an advertising graphic designer for 17 years, Terry witnessed changes in the advertising industry and knew he wanted to try something different. However, he wasn’t prepared to quit his day job and jump full force into a new endeavor. For Terry, Happy & Healthy was a perfect choice since he could start part-time and grow it to a full-time business.

Even though these days most people know what a frozen fruit bar is, Terry reveals that when he started in business three years ago, not many people understood what he was selling. "They though the frozen fruit bars were popsicles or ice cream," he says. In order to educate the public about his delicious treats, Terry took his cart out every weekend to one of the busiest parks in his neighborhood and sold his frozen fruit bars to the public. They were an instant hit. From there he gained freezer accounts at corporate cafeterias, video stores, gymnastics centers, athletic clubs, mini-marts, and gas stations.

What makes the Happy & Healthy frozen fruit bars any different from the ones in the local grocery store? When asked for his key to success, Terry asserts that cautiously building his business has been his wisest move. "I devote a lot of time to my business," he says. "But I don’t take any money out. I put all my profits back into the business and watch it grow." Although he also admits that his frugal ways are a bit of a sacrifice, he knows they will pay off in the end. "This isn’t a get-rich-quick deal," he explains. "But I see my business growing and I see the income potential."

Aside from his own dedication, Terry also cites the company itself as being one of his keys to success. "Happy & Healthy sends a marketing person to help you set up your first ten freezer accounts," Terry says. "Just seeing how the marketing people sell and spending a week with them definitely gets you off on the right foot." In addition, Happy & Healthy makes various advertising materials available to their franchisees, and they require absolutely no royalty fees, a rarity in today’s franchise marketplace.

Operating out of his garage and making frozen fruit bar deliveries throughout the week, Terry one day envisions himself with a full-fledged Happy & Healthy distributorship. His goal is to have his own warehouse, cold storage facility, and personalized delivery truck within the next five years. Another part of his goal also involves leaving his advertising job and pursuing his Happy & Healthy business full-time.

For those people searching for a home business opportunity, Terry’s biggest piece of advice is to study the competition and see what else is out there. "Don’t jump into anything hastily," he warns. "If someone says you’ll make quick money, you’d better step back and look at it again. I’ve researched several business and found that there’s no such thing as getting rich quick."

What will lead to success and riches? According to Terry, "Working hard and keeping at it." And based on Terry’s track record and proven dedication, he will certainly attain those goals plus many more.
