| Family Values After more than 20 years at General
Electric, Anthony Cracolici found corporate life stifling. The corporate environment was
unpredictable and left him with little energy to devote to his young family. "When he
was home, he wasnt really here," recalls Tammy Cracolici, 31, who had quit her
accounting job to stay at home with their son and was also feeling restless. "He was
preoccupied and wrung out from being in that kind of pressure-cooker environment."
In the spring of 1996, Anthony Cracolici was terminated.
"The corporate life is like an umbilical cord," continues Tammy. "You
dont want to cut it, but you have to if youre going to move on with your life.
Wed always talked about owning a business, but we needed a kick in the pants to take
a risk and do something that would be more rewarding." Neither had ever owned a
business, but they were determined to have a life where theyd be able to spend time
as a family.
In May 1996, the couple attended a small-business expo in Albany, N.Y. A
new franchise caught their attention: Happy & Healthy Products, Inc., a Boca Raton,
Fla.-based franchise, which sells all-natural frozen dessert bars. They especially liked
the franchises program called "The Flexible Franchise," i.e., no set
hours, no rigid rules. Franchisees determine how much they want to work. They work from
home and most include the family. The workstyle matches the franchisees lifestyles.
The two are now master distributors, the highest level of franchise ownership at Happy
& Healthy. "Before, Anthony didnt even have energy to read to Thomas at
night," says Tammy. "Now he takes off three or four days a week to devote
himself to Thomas." Next year the Cracolicis plan to double the size of their
business. Meanwhile, Tammy enjoys her new role as a woman business owner. "We love
being together and working together," she says. |
